Spoon Carving

Spoon Carving

$160.00

All day carving event with Eric Goodson, renowned carving teacher. Spoons are central tools in the human experience; they may very well be the first and last tools we use in this life. They also make great projects for beginner carvers, with their convex and concave surfaces and changing grain direction. In this course, students will learn about wood selection, grain orientation, spoon design and ergonomics, and a wide variety of special knife grips (for both slöjd and hook knives) that make carving fast, efficient, and safe. Attention will also be paid to stretches and massage that help relieve hand fatigue. Finally, students will also discuss finishing oils, paints, and decorative techniques like chip carving and kolrosing. Loaner tools will be available, though if students have their own carving tools, they should bring them. Slöjd knives (Mora 106, 120, and 164) will also be for sale. All students will receive a spoon template that they can take home to make more! No experience necessary, and as long as you can easily open a jar of spaghetti sauce, you have sufficient hand strength. Teens welcome.

All Day Spoon Carving

All Day Spoon Carving

$160.00

Spoon carving has become somewhat of a craze, and for good reason; spoons are truly amazing pieces of functional sculpture.  This one-day course will introduce students to the world of Slöjd, or Swedish handcraft, teach them how to safely and efficiently use both slöjd and hook knives, and explore decorative traditions like chip carving and kolrosing.

Students who have taken the spreader and/or spatula class will find many new challenges in this course, as design considerations, changing grain direction and the hollowing process definitely bring new demands.  That said, there are no prerequisites for this class.

All students will be given two pre-axed spoon blanks.  Loaner tools will be available, though Slöjd knives (Mora 106 and 120) and hook knives (Mora 164) will also be for sale.  If you have your own tools, by all means bring them.

No experience necessary, and so long as you can easily open a jar of spaghetti sauce, you have sufficient hand strength.
